Still hacking away at it. Nothing really to show you, because most of it is backend stuff bouncing packets back and forth. Hopefully I will have the login by the end of this weekend if I get some free time to code

Can’t forget about my WoW-time. Been leveling a druid for awhile now. Got him to 74, hoping to hit 80 in the next week.

The Phantasia client(shown below) now displays a message from the new server. It took a bit to figure out how the packets were being sent, but I think I have it figured out now and can really make a push on this project.

Dunno if anyone will remember this, but Phantasia 4(http://phantasia4.com) was an amazing text based game that was shut down a few months ago. It’s basically an online remake of phantasia 3 for Unix systems… it’s got all the classic rpg aspects… and … permadeath!

Lol, maybe someday I’ll get off that kick, but I’m disappointed that permadeath doesn’t exist in any AAA mmo’s.

Anyways, I have the p4 source and I’m recoding it completely in Java. I plan on keeping the same client(as it’s already in Java) but redoing the entire server(written in C). So far so good, I’ve got the client talking to the new server, so now time to add fun stuff!

In other news…

Our turn-based strategy using XNA studio is coming along well. We now have gameplay! More on this later…

I loved the Divine Comedy, and I can’t believe I didn’t see this game earlier. If they do a good job polishing this game and stick to the original story, this will be one heck of a game.

Game Development Status

Blackburn Online Games is making its comeback nicely. Including myself, we now have 2 programmers, 1 artist, and 1 musician, which brings us to 4 people strong!

Two games in the whole right now:

One is a text based RTS using the Facebook platform. I am an avid Mafia Wars player( currently level 80 ), however, I am getting sick of all the mafia games out there. While the game is fun, I really don’t see why the current trends are mafia based games. So anyways, I decided to take it back to the medieval setting. Basically, you develop a kingdom and battle with other kingdoms, while belonging to a settlement of other kingdoms, all striving to be the most powerful kingdom. I know this doesn’t explain much, but once the game is ready to be tested I’ll let everyone try it for themselves.

The second is a 2d/3d isometric/top down rpg using the XNA framework to be developed for Xbox 360. The last sentence was pretty complex so I’ll break it up.

2d/3d isometric/top down – Yes, it doesn’t make sense at all, but it works. The view of this game is top down, similar to Final Fantasy’s 1-6, which would believe one to think it is a 2d game. This is true, however, only the ground appears to be 2d. Scenery objects and characters are all designed to look quasi-3d. And because of the way the framework is designed, instead of everything being tile-based, we have implemented an isometric form of movement. However, in actuality, the game is still tile-based, it just has the quasi-isometric looking movement. So yeah…

XNA framework to be developed for Xbox 360 – The XNA framework is just a fancy term for a set of libraries for game developers to make games easier without having to worry about reinventing the wheel and programming all the basic graphics functions needed to make a game. XNA uses the C# language, which neither of us programmers have ever used, but it is our only option at this point. So why use the XNA framework if we don’t know the language? Well, XNA is the framework used to make Xbox 360 games. Our goal is to make a game that will be placed on the Xbox Marketplace Community Games section.

We’ve been slowing progressing on this game. Our design document is in progress and we are both focused on becoming familiar with C# and XNA( I can make a guy walk around and shoot fireballs! ). I can’t really tell you specific details about the game yet, well, because I don’t know them. My other programmer is the brains behind the design and I really don’t quite understand it myself actually, but it sounds really fun and I’ve already deemed it plausible for our skill levels as programmers. More details on that later though.

The Third Coming

Yes, this is now my third attempt at keeping a blog up-to-date.

Since my last posting, I have played WoW, quit WoW, played again, the quit again… and now I’ve basically got an active subscription and I log on here and there. Battlegrounds give XP now, which is pretty sweet, but other than that I really haven’t been paying much attention to any endgame content. The next expansion looks very appealing to me right now, but who knows.

Currently playing no MMORPG’s actively. I played Aion during the open beta, but it didn’t really bring anything new to the table, so needless to say… I didn’t buy it. Still waiting for FF13, FF14, and Diablo 3.

Changed My Mind

I haven’t had much time to play WoW lately, but after talking some things over with my friend, we decided to both start Rogues instead. So I rerolled again and this time for good. I’m level 6 and enjoying it so far. I can’t write too much though because my space bar is broken and words keep jumbling together. I need to get a new keyboard tomorrow….

It’s WoW Time Again

I installed The Chronicles of Spellborn a few days ago to give it a try since it recently became free to play, and it seemed like an okay game, but I just wasn’t hooked after my first hours of playing. Maybe I’ll go back to it after I get bored someday, but for now, I’ve decided to hit up WoW once again. This time I’ve rerolled an alliance shaman on a brand new server. I’m playing with a few friends who have never played alliance at all before so it should be fun for them. I haven’t played alliance since before Burning Crusade, so it should be give me something fresh to do.

My shaman is now level 5, and I’m a little worried because I’m not sure if I’ll want to play him at 80. I’m a pvper and the playstyle a shaman requires just isn’t me. We’ll see though, if my friends pick classes with good synergy to mine, I’m sure I’ll feel different. It’s nearly 2am right now, so it’ll have to wait til tomorrow.

MMORPG’s Are Bad

I’ve decided that the current generation of MMORPG’s is pathetic. So while waiting for Final Fantasy 14 to arrive, I am going to be first trying out Aion, and as a last resort rerolling alliance on World of Warcraft. At this point, I don’t see any point in playing any more crappy games. The WoW expansion looks pretty sweet too. New hero class and possible new races are what I’ve heard so far.
